As a horseman and a rancher, Matt recognizes that the situation with horses on American rangelands can be polarizing. As a rancher Matt knows that managing the numbers of horses on the rangelands is vital to both the health of the horses and the health of the land. Matt also feels strongly that horses on our rangelands are a part of the beauty of the American West.

In 2006, Matt began training horses professionally; he specializes in colt-starting for ranch versatility and trail. His first Extreme Mustang Makeover was in 2008, where he placed 5th out of about 40 competitors. Since then Matt’s passion for competing in mustang challenges has only grown. Overall Matt has completed in 13 Extreme Mustang Makeovers, of those he has placed in the “Top 10”, 11 times. Matt is a four time Mustang Makeover Champion and two-time Mustang Makeover Reserve Champion. He has also won 4 colt-starting challenges. Matt has also has had success showing in reining, trail, western pleasure winning many overall year end awards.

Matt and his wife Stacie train together at their facility, Zimmerman Horse Training, in Caldwell, Idaho. The Zimmerman’s program focuses on a building a solid foundation. Since 2013 Matt and Stacie have placed over 200 Mustangs into homes. Matt feels strongly that once a good foundation is laid, “the sky is the limit” for his horses. He also believes that trust between him and the horse has been key to his success.
